So before I begin, I want you to know that I’m not saying you should or even need to dress to look thin. But it is a question I am asked quite often. Clothes can make you appear shorter or taller, thinner or fluffier … not just the color but the style and how you wear them.
So if you’re looking to appear thinner or like you’ve lost 20 pounds, here are some great tips.
A portion of these were taken from my book, Help Me, Jesus, I have nothing to wear! (Zondervan) Used by permission from me! Ha!
Create a column with your clothes. When your top and bottom are similar/same in color, for example, black top and pants, it creates a longer line and you’ll look slimmer.
Proper Undergarments are key. If you haven’t had a professional bra fitting in the past 12 months, schedule an appointment at a local department or specialty store. High waisted panties will help hold in any extra tummy fluff so it may be time to get some new undies too.
Push your sleeves up so your top or jacket, and sleeves, don’t end at the same place. Usually all this requires is to push your sleeves up to ¾ length. This brings attention near your waist.
Hem lengths shouldn’t fall near where your calves touch. If your legs touch the whole way up, then choose mid knee for your hem lengths. This is a flattering length for all.
High waisted pants or jeans smooth the midriff area, especially if they are flat front, or no zip jeans.
Wear a belt to draw the eye to your curvy waist and away from fluffier parts of your body.
Stand up straight. Good Posture works wonders for looking better and thinner.
V-necks on most body shapes will bring attention to your face and not your full tummy or bust. The only exception is if you have very narrow shoulders, if so, then you’ll want a round or square neckline to achieve this slimming effect.
Wear a long necklace or scarf that falls at the middle of the body or just above or at the bust line. Make sure it doesn’t fall into the bust cleavage.
Change the color of the buttons on your jacket or blouse to a contrasting color from the garment. It’s a great way to change up the look of an outfit and also look thinner.
