The new Fall colors and styles have already begun hitting the retail market. As you browse the stores and your favorite websites, how can you ensure that what you purchase this coming season is something that will help you create ageless style? How do you choose things that aren’t just a passing fad? Here are 8 tips to help you have ageless, amazing style.
Dressing in clothes that fit and flatter your body shape and style personality will help you look ageless. Remember what your mother said when you were growing up, “Just because everyone is doing it, doesn’t mean you have to.” Same goes for fashion; just because you see it on everyone else doesn’t mean it will work for you.
Develop a style that fits your personality. You may like casual pieces: jeans, khakis, denim jackets, and oversized sweaters. As you mature, tweak your wardrobe to include less pieces of distressed denim covered in “bling” or studs worn with fitted graphic tees and transition to dark wash denim and tailored shirts. By adding a bit more sophistication, you add to your ageless style.
Alterations are your friend. If you have a piece you absolutely love but it needs some adjustments to still fit and flatter, look into having it altered. Sometimes having a favorite piece altered is more economical than trying to find a replacement. Remember, clothing that fits well helps you add to your ageless look.
Don’t show off too much skin. Subscribe to the theory that “Less is More”.
Buy the very best quality you can afford. Quality fabrics will wear, wash, and keep their shape and color better than their less expensive counterparts. It’s better to have 3 good tops you can wash and wear over and over again than to have 6 tops you need to replace after 2 or 3 wearings and washings.
Jeans are a classic staple for your wardrobe. For a timeless look, choose a dark wash denim in a boot cut or straight leg style. Have one pair hemmed to wear with flats and one pair to wear with heels. If comfort is a concern, look for jeans in a fabric that contains a bit of stretch.
A new, up to date haircut/style can keep you looking modern and timeless. Consider a new style especially if you are still wearing the same style you wore in high school. This is especially true if your high school years are becoming further and further in the past.
Remember the classic pieces of 2019 are not the same classic pieces of 2009 or 1999. Even classic pieces age and eventually go out of style. If you haven’t purged your closet recently, now may be the time. Those big shoulder pads, low rise jeans, and midriff baring sweaters need to go.
